How to Select the Right Jaw Crusher for Your Operation
Understanding Jaw Crusher Fundamentals
Jaw crushers are the workhorse of primary crushing in mineral processing plants. Selecting the right model directly impacts your plant’s throughput, product quality, and operating costs.
Key Selection Parameters
1. Maximum Feed Size
The crusher’s feed opening must accommodate your largest expected feed material. As a rule of thumb:
- Feed opening width should be at least 1.25× the maximum feed size
- For a 500mm max feed, select a crusher with ≥630mm feed opening (e.g., PE-600×900)
2. Required Capacity
Match the crusher’s throughput to your plant’s design capacity with a 15–20% margin:
| Model | Feed Opening (mm) | Max Feed (mm) | Capacity (t/h) | Motor (kW) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PE-400×600 | 400×600 | 340 | 16–64 | 30 |
| PE-600×900 | 600×900 | 500 | 50–160 | 75 |
| PE-750×1060 | 750×1060 | 630 | 80–240 | 110 |
| PE-900×1200 | 900×1200 | 750 | 140–320 | 160 |
| PE-1200×1500 | 1200×1500 | 1020 | 250–700 | 250 |
3. Material Hardness
- Soft to medium (limestone, coal): Standard manganese jaw plates suffice
- Hard and abrasive (granite, basalt, iron ore): Consider higher reduction ratio and robust frame design
4. Discharge Setting
The closed-side setting (CSS) determines your product size. Ensure the crusher’s adjustment range covers your target product size.
Application Scenarios
- Quarry primary crushing: PE-600×900 or PE-750×1060 for 100–300 t/h
- Mining primary crushing: PE-900×1200 or larger for 300+ t/h
- Aggregate production: PE-400×600 or PE-500×750 for smaller operations
- Recycling/C&D waste: Smaller models with hydraulic adjustment for flexibility
